Privacy policy
This policy explains what information the 99 Names of God app (“the app”) handles, why, who else receives it, and the choices you have. It is written to be read, so we have kept it plain. If anything is unclear, write to contact@99namesofgod.com.
1. Who is responsible
The app is published by 99namesofgod, which decides how and why the information described here is handled. Contact: contact@99namesofgod.com.
2. What the app handles
Using the app without an account
- Anonymous ID. When the app starts it asks Firebase Authentication for an anonymous account. This creates a random ID. It contains no name or email address.
- Settings, favourites, reflections and counts. Your language, display choices, favourites, written reflections, playlists and dhikr counts are stored on your device (or in your browser). While you are not signed in, reflections and dhikr counts stay there.
Signing in (optional)
You can sign in with Google to keep your reflections in sync. We receive your name, email address, profile photo address and account ID from Google, and Firebase Authentication stores them. Your favourites, reflections and dhikr counts are then stored in Google Cloud Firestore under your account ID.
Photos on reflections (mobile apps)
If you attach a photo to a reflection, it is stored on your device. When your device is online it is also uploaded to Firebase Cloud Storage under the account ID the app uses for you (an anonymous ID if you have not signed in). Photos can only be added in the mobile apps. You can remove a photo from a reflection in the app, which deletes it from your device and from cloud storage.
Location, prayer reminders and Qibla compass (mobile and desktop apps)
- These features are not part of the web app.
- If you turn on prayer times based on location, the app asks for your location permission. The coordinates are kept on your device. To calculate prayer times, the app sends those coordinates to the Aladhan prayer-times service (
api.aladhan.com), which returns the times. - The Qibla compass uses your location and your device’s compass sensor on the device itself. This information is not sent to us.
- Reminders are scheduled locally on your device. We do not run a push-notification server.
Usage statistics (analytics)
The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase. It records events such as the screens you open, which Names you view or play and for how long, language changes, which features you use, and timing measurements. Google also receives technical details such as an app-instance identifier, device and operating-system type, app version, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. We do not add your name, email or reflections to these events.
Crash and error reports
- Mobile and desktop apps: Firebase Crashlytics collects crash reports (technical error details, device and app version, and an installation identifier).
- Web app: errors are sent to a Firebase Cloud Function that records the error message, technical stack trace and time.
These reports are used only to find and fix faults. They are not meant to contain personal content.
Feedback you send
If you send feedback from within the app, we store your message together with the app version, build number, language and, on Android, device details (brand, model, manufacturer, hardware, memory and storage sizes). Please do not put personal information in your message.
Connectivity check, downloads and fonts
- The app checks whether you are online by contacting a Google connectivity-check address (
clients3.google.com). - The mobile apps can download higher-quality audio and data updates from Firebase Cloud Storage.
- Some fonts may be loaded from Google’s font servers.
In each case the server operator, Google, can see your IP address and basic request details.
3. Using the web app
- The web app stores your settings, favourites, reflections and counts in your browser’s storage (IndexedDB and local storage).
- To start quickly and work offline, it saves copies of its own files, audio and images in your browser’s cache using a service worker.
- The Firebase software it needs is loaded from Google’s servers (
gstatic.com), and Google Analytics for Firebase may keep identifiers in your browser. - You can remove all of this by clearing the site data for this website in your browser settings.
Prayer reminders, the Qibla compass and photo reflections are not available in the web app.
4. Who receives data
We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it for advertising. We use these service providers to run the app:
| Provider | What for | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Firebase and Google Cloud) | Hosting, anonymous and Google sign-in, cloud storage of reflections and photos, analytics, crash reports, error logging | Everything described in section 2 that is not marked as device-only |
Aladhan (aladhan.com) | Calculating prayer times (mobile and desktop apps) | Coordinates you choose to use for prayer times |
| Google (fonts, connectivity check) | Loading fonts and checking the connection | IP address and basic request details |
These providers process data on our behalf or under their own terms and may handle it in countries other than your own, including the United States. Their policies apply to their processing, for example Google’s privacy policy and Firebase privacy information. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
5. Your choices and settings
- Turn off statistics and crash reports. In Settings, turn off Enable Network. This stops analytics and crash-report collection. It also stops syncing and downloads. The app keeps working with the data on your device.
- Wi-Fi only. You can restrict network use to Wi-Fi.
- Permissions. Location and notification permissions can be changed or withdrawn at any time in your device settings. The app asks only when you turn on a feature that needs them.
- Account. Signing in is optional. You can use the app without an account.
6. How long data is kept
- Data on your device or in your browser stays until you remove it, uninstall the app or clear the site data.
- Cloud data (account, reflections, dhikr counts, photos) is kept until you or we delete it, as described in section 7.
- Analytics and crash data is kept by Google for a limited period set in our Firebase and Google Analytics settings.
- Feedback messages are kept for as long as they are useful for improving the app.
7. Deleting your data
You can delete a reflection or photo inside the app at any time. To have your whole account and everything stored with it deleted, or to receive a copy of it:
- Email contact@99namesofgod.com from the address you signed in with. If you never signed in, tell us the account ID shown in the app, if available, or describe how you used the app.
- We will confirm your request and complete it within 30 days.
Deleting the app from your device, or clearing the browser site data, removes the copy on that device but not the cloud copy.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or California), you may have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, receive a portable copy, object to or restrict some processing, and withdraw consent you have given. Write to contact@99namesofgod.com and we will respond within the time the law requires. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.
Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on: providing the features you ask for (sign-in, sync, reflections); your consent (location and notification permissions, optional sign-in); and our legitimate interests in keeping the app secure, fixing faults and understanding how it is used.
9. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with Google Cloud, which applies industry-standard protections. No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles data, we will update this page and the effective date above. For significant changes we will also tell you in the app.
